History at Lanzarote Airport

In the 1930s, the need for connections to other islands, the mainland, and a refueling point for aircraft made it clear that the island needed an airport. Airfield construction at Llanos de Guacimeta followed shortly after that. Upon its opening in 1941, the airport saw its first aircraft arrive.

A permanent airfield was thus built in Arrecife by the Spanish Air Force for defensive purposes. The airport began accepting civilian flights on a trial basis in 1946. An extended runway and more parking spaces for aircraft were added to the preexisting infrastructure.

In addition to the brand-new runway and control tower, we also built a passenger terminal. The airport officially opened to domestic and international flights on March 3, 1970. César Manrique's mural "Lanzarote" was the focal point of the Guacimeta terminal.

The airport's increasing popularity necessitated the installation of new and better amenities. Runway 03/21 now has improved holding points in addition to DME, ILS, and VOR technology. Both new runway lights and a fire station were approved for construction.

A new terminal (Terminal 1) that can handle 6 million passengers per year opened in 1999. The original airport terminal was renovated and now serves as a hub for inter-island flights (Terminal 2).

Aena turned the Guacimeta passenger terminal into an aviation museum in 2002 in response to growing interest among visitors and island residents in the island's rich aviation history. The museum offers an in-depth look at the development of aviation on the island. Several visual displays are available.

The airport's official name was changed in 2019 to honor local artist César Manrique on the occasion of the centennial of the artist's birth.
