History of Málaga Airport

Málaga Airport has been operating continuously in its current location since regular flights were first established by Didier Daurat between Toulouse, Barcelona, Alicante, Tangier, and Casablanca in the early 1920s.

In the 1960s, a new terminal was built in the middle of the field, and the existing runway was lengthened. New navigational equipment, including a radar system by the decade's end in 1970, was installed during this time of expansion.

A brand-new terminal for travelers was unveiled in 1968. A second terminal for unscheduled passenger traffic opened in 1972. With more and more travel agencies providing all-inclusive vacation packages, the airport was seeing an uptick in business from this sector.

The airport's current Terminal 2 was built in 1991, but the original terminal opened the year before. Ricardo Bofill's Taller de Arquitectura was responsible for its design. Almost all operations, except check-in, were relocated as soon as this terminal opened.

In 1995, the airport's old passenger terminal was repurposed as a general aviation terminal. A new hangar for servicing large aircraft was constructed north of the airport grounds.

The following year, a cargo-only terminal and a hangar for large aircraft maintenance were built. All parking gates received fueling stations and were enlarged in 1997.
