Bilbao (Abando Indalecio Prieto) Train Station

Abando Indalecio Prieto railway station (Basque: Abandoko Indalecio Prieto geltokia, Spanish: Estación de Abando Indalecio Prieto) is a terminal railway station in Bilbao, Basque Country. It was formerly called Estación del Norte (North Station) (Spain). The name derives from the station's neighborhood, Abando, and the Minister of Public Works during the Second Spanish Republic, Indalecio Prieto.

The station is served by the local Bilbobus services listed below. The letter "G" in a line's name indicates that it is a Gautxori night line service.

  • 10 Elorrieta - Plaza Circular
  • A1 Asunción - Plaza Circular
  • A2 Solokoetxe - Plaza Circular
  • A5 Prim - Plaza Circular
  • G2 Otxarkoaga - Plaza Circular
  • G3 Larraskitu - Plaza Circular
  • G4 La Peña - Plaza Circular
  • G5 San Adrián / Miribilla - Plaza Circular
  • G6 Zorrotza - Plaza Circular
  • G7 Mina del Morro - Plaza Circular
  • G8 Arangoiti - Plaza Circular

The station is the endpoint for various long- and medium-distance Renfe services and Cercanas commuter rail services within the Bilbao metropolitan area. The station connects to the Metro, tram, and numerous local and regional bus routes.

Renfe Feve-operated Bilbao-Concordia train station is located nearby. After completing the Basque Y high-speed line, Bilbao-Abando will serve as the western terminus, necessitating the construction of an entirely new station to replace the existing one.

The station has always served both intercity and long-distance Cercanas trains. Unusually for a terminus station located in a city of Bilbao's size, there are no regional medium-distance trains available at this station.

This lack of services is offset by the close vicinity of the Bilbao-Concordia and Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo stations, which provide local and regional service to Santander, León, and San Sebastián.

Bilbao-Abando station features two distinct primary areas. The five-story, U-shaped main hall building has a total of five stories. As part of the 1948 remodeling, it was constructed of reinforced concrete, granite, limestone, and brick to give the structure a colossal aspect. The second structure is an appendage to the main structure and features a shed with 12 arches and a semicircular shape.

One of the station's most distinctive features is the stained glass that overlooks the train platforms. It comprises 301 parts and measures 15 meters wide by 10 meters tall. Jess Arrechubieta created it in 1948 based on a concept by Miguel Pastor Veiga. The glass represents several activities and landmarks typical of Biscayan life, such as the Basilica of Begoa.

The station's first and bottom floors have restaurants, gift shops, and other services. The third story, in contrast, has rail lines, stations, and other railway-related services.
