History of Leon Airport
A ministerial provision on territorial distribution and organization of military forces and services from March 1920 designated León as a location for an air station. In 1924, the works to adapt the air station were approved, allowing planes flying between Madrid and Asturias to make pit stops at León airport. The military airport was permitted to offer commercial air navigation services in 1929.
The airport was situated seven kilometers south of León and one kilometer north of the village of Virgen del Camino. Herds of cattle grazed on a flat, hard area of land. A windsock and a marking in the middle of the airfield served as navigational aids. There were four hangars for storing and servicing planes and access to utilities like gas, oil, water, and telephones. At the time, the station served as the nerve center for the Northwest Regional Fleet's 21st Inspection Unit, which belonged to the Number One Squadron.
The León airport served as the command center for many airborne units during the Spanish Civil War. It was classified as a priority after the war ended. There were communication devices like radios, telephones, and lights for use at night.
The buildings first housed a school for pilot training in the 1940s, when the General Aviation School awarded its first diplomas. After its demise, the Air Force Specialists School and the Apprentices School took their place.
About Leon, Spain
Located in the northwestern corner of the Iberian Peninsula, the city and municipality of León serve as the administrative center for the province of the same name in the autonomous community of Castile and León. About 200,000 people call the metro area home; this includes residents of San Andrés del Rabanedo and other nearby municipalities.
It was an encampment city established in the late 29th century B.C. by the Legio VI Victrix. In 74 A.D., the legion was permanently established as the Seventh Gemina Legion. When the Umayyads conquered the peninsula and drove out a large portion of the population, León's most prosperous era began in 910, when it became the capital of the Kingdom of León and played a key role in the Reconquista against the Moors, eventually becoming one of the many kingdoms that made up medieval Spain.
During the reign of Alfonso IX in 1188, the city hosted the first Parliament in European history. As a result, the city was designated as the cradle of Parliamentarism in 2010 by professor John Keane, the King of Spain, and the Junta of Castile and León. In 2013, the Decreta of León was added to UNESCO's Memory of the World register for its significance.
Loss of independence following the consolidation of the Leonese kingdom's union with the Crown of Castile in 1301 contributed to the city's decline in the early Middle Ages. It was one of the first cities to rise up during the Spanish War of Independence, following a period of dormancy in the early modern period. In 1833, after several years of development, it became the provincial capital.
When the city became a major communications hub of the northwest at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries due to the development of the coal mining industry and the introduction of railroads, urbanization increased significantly. Because of its location on the French Way of the Camino de Santiago, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city of León attracts visitors worldwide. The city's rich historical and architectural history and the many festivals held throughout the year (most notably the Easter processions) contribute to this popularity.
The Cathedral is one of Spain's finest examples of French-style classic Gothic architecture. The Basilica of San Isidoro, one of the most important Romanesque churches in Spain and the resting place of León's medieval monarchs, the Monastery of San Marcos, an example of plateresque and Renaissance Spanish architecture, and the Casa Botines, a Modernist creation of architect Antoni Gaud, are some of the city's most prominent historical buildings. The City Museum of Contemporary Art (MUSAC) is a great example of contemporary architecture.
