History of Menorca Airport
San Luis Aerodrome, Menorca's first airport, opened in the late 1930s during the Spanish Civil War and featured a runway stretching 850 meters in length. In the '40s, the airstrip saw a lot of use by planes passing through on their way to or from the nearby island of Mallorca. San Luis was officially converted to civilian use in 1949 by the Spanish Ministry of Aviation.
The first flight to land at the airstrip, a Bristol 170 operated by Aviaco and departing from Barcelona in August 1949, landed successfully. The runway was lengthened twice to handle the larger Douglas DC-4 that Aviaco began flying to San Luis in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The airport was formally rechristened as Mahón Airport in September 1965.
When air travel became increasingly popular in the 1960s, it became clear that a new, larger airport was required, ideally one with a longer runway to accommodate the increasingly common jetliners. The current airport was built from the ground up beginning in 1967. Menorca Airport, as it was then known, opened to the public on March 24, 1969. Since then, San Luis has served as a flying club for light aircraft.
The number of passengers using the airport annually surpassed 1 million by 1986 after experiencing steady growth throughout the 1970s and 1980s. As a result, the airport's current terminal was built in 1987 and opened to the public in May 1988. The airport was opened in its current form in 2008 after being enlarged and renovated multiple times during the 1990s and 2000s in response to the ever-increasing number of passengers using the facility.
