History of Pamplona Airport

The City Council's first initiative to construct an airport began in 1930. Construction began in February 1930 on land six kilometers south of the city, near the village of Noan, on the road from Madrid to Pamplona.

Aerodrome was occasionally used by Nationalist aircraft during the Spanish Civil War. After the war, the facilities were left in disrepair. The Real Aeroclub de Navarra building, with its headquarters in Noan, was given the green light in November 1965. The construction of a 500-meter runway was authorized by the Ministry of Aviation in 1968. Construction on the airport began the following year and opened in the same year.

Civilian domestic air traffic began using Noan Airport, which opened on July 5, 1972 and was given a category three designation. Aviaco, an airline, started flying thrice weekly to Madrid the following day, in 1975.

Maintenance on the airport's runway lights started in February 1975. A power plant was constructed the following year. In the late 1980s, the airport of Pamplona, Spain, installed a CAT I instrument landing system (ILS) at departure point 16, and plans were made to equip departure point 34 with navigation aids.

The airport terminal was partially destroyed in October 1991. On November 11, 1992, construction concluded on a new 2,600-square-meter building. Paved areas and public parking lots were expanded beginning in November 1993. Due to the expansion, there are now 340 parking spots available for regular cars, 24 for taxis, and 6 for buses.
