History of Reus Airport

The first seeds of what would become Reus Airport were planted in 1935 when the newly formed Reus Flying Club purchased land and began construction on a landing strip. The following year, two dirt runways (1,100 x 60 m and 850 x 25 m) were used for operations. One of the three airports that served the area around Reus during the civil war was built on this plot of land. Maspujol and Salou hosted the other two.

When the war ended, military infrastructure was maintained at Reus Airport, and the airport opened to civilian traffic. The wider dirt strips were replaced in 1952 by a compact runway and taxiway measuring 2,200 by 45 meters.

Air travel to and from Reus began in 1957. When charter flights became commonplace in the 1960s, the airport had to evolve to meet the growing demand. The terminal and apron for commercial planes were constructed in 1974; the apron was enlarged in 1976. There were three terminal expansions in 1978, 1979, and 1988.
