History of Santa Cruz de La Palma Airport

Tazacorte Beach is located in a maritime-land area. In 1921, Gumersindo Acosta Hernández was given permission by the Ministry of Public Works to set up an air transport service for Martino Canaria there. The introduction of air travel to La Palma is being heralded here for the first time. During the 1950s, a new airport was planned in response to growing commercial, educational, and healthcare demands.

Because of the island's mountainous terrain, it takes work to find a level spot near the major cities. This small plain was selected because of its proximity to the island's capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma, relatively low elevation (about 350 meters), and its short distance (about eight kilometers).

Constructing a strip of land on this plain that was 1,000 meters long and 100 meters wide was possible. The Buenavista Airport opened to the public in 1955 after its construction was completed that year.

Iberia operated a small fleet of DC-3s and military Junker 52s to provide daily service to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The runway at the new airport was rendered unusable by the regular rainfall, so the Ministry of Aviation constructed a tarmac runway.

The airport was closed during the summer of 1956 so that it could be resurfaced; this work was completed at the start of 1958. More than fifteen times in the following years, precipitation and prevailing winds made it necessary to temporarily halt operations. The proximity of the mountains caused wind shifts and dense fog, which could not be mitigated by drainage improvements or the construction of a taxiway.

Because of these issues and the airport's physical limitations, aviation authorities searched for a new site. In the municipality of Mazo, a strip of land was selected that runs almost exactly perpendicular to the coastline. After the plan was finalized, construction began on the runway, and it first opened to the public in 1970.

With the strip's debut and the anticipated rise in traffic, it was wise to build a breakwater, which, once filled in, would provide a level area big enough to extend the existing runway at one end. The brand-new runway first welcomed airplanes and cars on April 1, 1980.

Along with new access roads and a new Rescue and Fire Fighting Service (RFFS) building, a new terminal, public car park, and control tower were opened in 2011. The aircraft parking apron and power plant were expanded, and a new baggage screening and handling system was implemented.
