History of Tenerife North Airport

Many years had passed, the airport had been built, and the landing field at Los Rodeos was hastily prepared to accommodate the first flight into Tenerife operated by an Arado VI (D-1594) aircraft flying from Berlin on behalf of Deutsche Luft Hansa. Though it has been known to be unofficial.

In May 1930, the Compania de Lineas Aereas Subvencionadas S.A. (CLASSA) launched the first air connection between the Spanish mainland and the Canary Islands utilizing a Ford 4-AT Trimotor. It took off from Getafe, Madrid, to the Los Rodeos field through Casablanca, Cape Juby, and Gando in Gran Canaria.

After the final area of the airport had been settled, funds were collected between 1935 and 1939 to construct a small hangar and start developing the airstrip, which would become Los Rodeos.

Operations in Los Rodeos recommenced on January 23, 1941. In 1946, more hangars, a passenger terminal, and an 800-meter concrete runway were built. The airport was officially opened to the public for all national and international traffic. The landing strip was stretched at various times during the 1940s and 1950s, running a length of 2,400 meters or 7,874 feet in 1953. By then, the airport was fitted with runway edge lighting and an air-ground radio, allowing night operations.

By 1964, runway 12/30 had been extended to 3,000 meters to accommodate the DC-8. New navigation pieces of equipment were installed, and the apron was developed to provide additional airplane parking spaces.

In 1971, with the possibility of the Boeing 747 flying in the airport, the runway was reinforced with an Instrument Landing System (ILS). In 2002, a new terminal was opened at Tenerife North Airport, comprising a car park, motorway access ramps, and a four-story terminal building with twelve gates. In February 2003, Santa Barbara Airlines transferred its Caracas service from Reina Sofia Airport to Tenerife North. In 2005, an inter-island domestic area was opened. In late 2009, the company was determined to make the flight permanent. In June 2010, following a momentary break for aircraft maintenance, the plane carrier resumed its services to Miami. The route operated every summer, and the season's final ascent occurred in October.
