History of Tenerife South Airport

In the late 1960s, the local authorities of Tenerife island expressed the need for a new airfield terminal at a new site since the existing airport (Tenerife North Airport) did not meet technical prerequisites due to unfavorable weather conditions, especially during low visibility in foggy conditions; this was exemplified by one of the deadliest aviation mishaps in history, when on March 27, 1977, two Boeing 747's clashed on the runway at Los Rodeos with 583 passenger casualties.

Twenty months later, with the tragedy still fresh and vivid in people's minds, Queen Sofia of Spain inaugurated the new airport facility on November 6, 1978, to whom the airport was named. The landing strip's first flight was Iberia flight IB187 from Lanzarote, operated by a McDonnell Douglas DC-9, landing at 10:17. The airport was built near the Tomas Zerolo airfield and closed when TFS opened. By the end of its first year of operation, about one million passengers had passed through the latest airport.

In June 1980, flights to Caracas were inaugurated by Viasa. This connection served a large ratio of the Canarian diaspora that lived in Venezuela. The airline stopped operations in 1997, after which Avensa began plying the route. Due to financial issues, Avensa allows Santa Barbara Airlines to take over its flights to Spain in exchange for a codeshare arrangement.

Santa Barbara started service to Reina Sofia Airport in October 2002 using McDonnell Douglas DC-10 equipment. However, it changed to Tenerife North Airport four months later.

United Airlines ventured a direct connection to Newark in June 2022. Boeing 757s handle the flight on a seasonal basis.

After the 1833 territorial separation of Spain, until 1927, Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the only capital of the Canary Islands. It has the modern Auditorio de Tenerife, the architectural mark of the Canary Islands.
