Parking Tips at Valverde Airport

To save time in parking your car, below are some tips to flawlessly and efficiently park your vehicle without breaking a sweat:

Perpendicular Parking

  • Find a suitable space. The parking space you choose must be ample enough for your car to fit in.
  • Check your mirrors. It's important to know if another car or road user is approaching from behind when parking, regardless of whether you are reversing or pulling straight into a spot. Check your rearview mirror. Checking allows you to make sure it's safe to park. Also, do not forget to check your wing mirrors and blind spots. Cyclists, pedestrians, or motorists might take it as a chance to overtake you when they see you slowing down.
  • Indicate where you are going to park. Whether it is the bay on the left or the right, once you've found a parking spot and checked your mirrors, you need to let those around you know the direction that you are parking in.
  • Position the car at a good angle. Slowly set your vehicle so that it is in the middle of the parking lane. If the lane is made for only one traffic direction, fix your car to the opposite side of the aisle as far as possible to allow more room for turning.
  • Stop your car when its front bumper is about half the way past the parking space, then turn your wheel towards the parking space and slowly begin driving your vehicle into the area.
  • Check your vehicle's left and right sides to ensure a reasonable amount of free space on either side.
  • Keep rotating your steering wheel as you pull into the parking slot until your car parallels the cars parked on either side of that space.

Perpendicular Back Parking

Just like regular perpendicular parking, perpendicular back parking involves slotting your car into a standard 4.8-meter-long, 2.4-meter-wide parking bay*. However, instead of driving into the space front-end first, you reverse in, making it much easier to leave the car park.

  • Align your car's rear for a smooth reverse. You'll need to go past the parking space you want to pull into to give you enough angle to get in the first time.
  • Perform the first three steps of an average perpendicular park (find a space, check your rearview mirrors for approaching cars/road users, and indicate towards the empty bay).
  • Check that the front of your car is clear. Look straight out the front window (after you've checked, nothing is behind you) as you initially reverse.
  • Ensure you don't accidentally hit another parked car when the front swings out as you turn the steering wheel.
  • If you are too close to the other cars, reposition yourself further toward the side where you wish to park so that your front end has enough clearance.

Parallel Parking

Parallel parking is generally considered the most difficult of parking techniques.

  • To perfectly do this, leave one door's width between the cars. Pull up alongside another parked car around a 1-meter distance from the other parked car's door before reversing into a space behind it.
  • Align your door mirror with the front of the other car.
  • Start turning when you're level with the other car.
  • Use the car behind the curb as a reference. Check-in your passenger-side door mirror for the registration of the car parked behind you. Once this appears in the mirror, straighten the steering and begin reversing until the front of your car is past the back of the car in front.
